\”From the world of sounds I pour,..\” by Mehinbanu Aslan Pashayeva
Sometimes forever it remains for people,
Mirza Shafi Vazeh (18th century – 1852)
A short, but although profound line.
Through brief word wisdom will make it’s way to men,
Although a century ago it flew off the tongue.
After getting to know Mirza Shafi better and realizing the seriousness of a couple of his songs, I understood why Bodenstedt had gained such a wide fame among his fellow countrymen. Vazeh (“Vazeh” means “expressive”) gave people a direction to follow in spite of the gloom and gloom to which mankind had to bear witness against their will. Some were discovering the fundamentals of the cycle of life, and some simply wanted to be comforted; one was flattered that he met all the standards of a man of a different, higher frame of mind, while another was ashamed to recognize in the stanzas his constant appearance, which had hitherto seemed to him an ideal. His angle of view on the foundation of human views of existence varied somewhat: something in a greater, another in a lesser volume. Human creatures react differently to concepts that oppose their primary principles, but in the case of “Songs of Mirza Shafi”, without knowing how much his way of thinking differed from the thoughts of the society of that time, I can safely say that Mirza Shafi Vazeh managed to awaken the delight of the human soul of his period of existence and not only.
The dexterous scribe\’s lines were reflected both in the next stage of poetry development, in the path of the next generation of creators, and in the musical gradation: Anton Rubinstein\’s music for 13 songs by Mirza Shafi, which was performed by the bass voice of Fyodor Chaliapin and received wide publicity from the people of Russia; Carl Millöcker\’s operetta; the libretto written by Paul. His “songs” reached Tolstoy himself, the great author of such well-known books as “War and Peace”, “Anna Karenina”, “Crime and Punishment” and so on; who paid attention to them in a letter to Fet, noting that there were lovely things there. As Makowelski mentioned in his speech about a significant son of the Turkic region: “Mirza Shafi is a representative of the progressive intellectuals of the 19th century who helped build the path of Akhundov and Zardabi”.
Mirza Fatali Akhundov himself would later thank his mentor for removing the veil from his eyes and changing his intentions regarding the clergy of the time. Vazeh made enemies among the clergy because of his constant arguments over religious prejudices, and then he blotted out the part of his life associated with religious fanaticism by opening the eyes of his students to their future, guiding their immature minds in the right direction.
We, the young generation, are told the same thing; we should not forget who we are, who we are, because in the future no one will simply tell the truth about the great legacy that came from the very, exalted persons who shook the world with their judgments about the face of life, which they were lucky to meet.
Mirza Shafi Vazeh became another member of the “Circle of Wisdom” in both the literal and figurative sense of this statement. Having read his first creations, one can think that his whole essence consisted of only admiration of femininity of that girl, who was remembered by him for the whole life. Even though, going deeper one can see the appeal to religious fanaticism, distribution of all living things in their places and fulfillment of their duties according to their roles, high society, their haters, and simple but happy way of life. These features were revealed to me while reading this author, another representative of the power of literary art of the Turkic world, a native of Ganja region. Lastly, your author would finish this article with words of our today’s main character:
***
From the world of sounds I pour,
Gleams, as sun pour on us, —
I don’t sing of deadshit matter,
Only glory is my song.
